Whole Cloth Quilt

After many months of contemplation, I purchased a whole cloth pattern set. Here are pictures of it draped over my bed. It took me 13 hours and 17 M size bobbins to complete the queen size quilt. I love the look!!! Now I am ready to do it again!!

Deanna custom quilted this quilt for one of her clients. This quilt was pieced by a group of quilters with the intent of auctioning the quilt. Deanna quilted this one on her Long Arm Quilting machine, she used a sawtooth feather pattern published by Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio and as you can see the main block pattern as well as the rest of the quilt looks awesome. This quilt will no doubt be cherished for decades to come.

Andrew’s Quilt

Deanna has been working on a quilt for our son Andrew, it is made up of two different blocks, a 9 patch block and a cake stand block. The fabrics are Batiks. Below you can see Deanna working with Creative Studio which is the software the controls the computer guilded quilting machine.

Compression Quilt Hangers

Just finished up a few compression quilt hangers that I will probably try to sell on the company web site shop.appoquinquilting.com and on ebay. The hangers pictures can hold a quilt up to 36″ in length, the top ledge is 38″ or so in length. They are made of solid oak and have a natural satin finish. There are three screws on the back that provide the clamping action and two eye slots to attach the hanger to the wall.

Apple Picking Ladder

Apple Ladder Quilt Rack

Hey, I just finished the long awaited, much anticipated apple picking ladder quilt rack. Just kidding, I actually completed it a week ago but have not had much blogging time. Anyway, this one is 5 feet long with four rungs and is made out of solid Oak. Deanna asked me to finish it with a darker stain so, as I am a good husband, I proceeded to do so. Like I said in a eariler post, I like to use clear finishes but I also like being married. . . . The customer is always right, and this time the customer is Deanna.

Quilt Hangers

Hi, this is Scott; I am having trouble motivating Deanna to write her own posts, like any good quilter, she is more interested in quilting than writing about quilting. No matter, today I wanted to show you a few of my own projects, quilting related of course. I am a part time woodworker and have a few quilt hanger designs that we have mounted around the house. In Deanna’s quilting studio, I have a few that I made last year. I kind of favor the type that of quilt hanger that sandwiches the quilt ever so gently between two pieces of wood. I prefer to use hardwood lumber for my projects since they are generally straighter pieces of wood and machine nicer. As for finishes, I like to keep the end product as close to it’s natural shade as possible. I use urethane with a satin finish whenever possible. I figure, if you want a piece with a Maple finish, build it with Maple and not out of Pine and stain it to look like Maple.

I digress, below are two examples of quilting hangers, the one with the knobs is made from Pine. The knobs are functional as they are used to clamp the two pieces of wood together to gently hold the quilt in place. There is a groove in the front piece to help hold the quilt in place. This style is easy to mount as you can just screw thru the back piece directly into studs or use molly bolts. The stars on either side were purchased at Lowes and just glued in place before finishing. The second hanger is made from Oak, my favorite wood to work with. It has screws in the back which performs the clamping function. This one is nice because there are no visible mounting or clamping hardware, just nice clean lines. Mounting for this one is a bit more difficult. To mount, you need to set two screws or molly bolts into the wall a certain distance apart. On the back of the hanger are two key holes which accept the wall mounted screws. This style is more difficult to mount, but more visually appealing in the long run.

I am working on two new designs, one uses dowels between two vertical mounting brackets topped with a shelf for quilts that have a horizontal pocket and a second type that I call an Apple Picking ladder. Essentially a ladder that is wider at the bottom than at the top with wooden dowels for rungs. The idea is to rest it against a wall and drape your quilts over each rung.

Valentine’s Day/Saint Patrick’s Day Placemats

Scott here again, this week’s quilt project is a set of four placements that Deanna quilted on her long arm quilting machine and bound using bias binding. One of her customers requested a set of placements with different material on either side allowing her to get twice the use out the placements as she chose seasonal fabrics. Deanna used this idea on this project. On one side, she chose, Valentine’s Day fabric and the other side chose Saint Patrick’s Day fabric. The placements were quilted with a cross hatch design and what I would call scalloped edges. I will ask Deanna exactly which pattern she used in a subsequent post. She bound the placemats with material cut on the bias. Cutting the binding material on the bias is a great way to add a bit more flair to your quilted projects. We plan on producing a video on how to cut binding on the bias for posting to YouTube. Anyway, back to the placements, she machine bound the edges and they look awesome. Here are some pictures.

Quilting as an obsession

Hi, this Scott, Deanna’s husband. I am always trying to find cool new ways to promote my wife, Deanna’s business, Appoquinimink Quilting. Appoquinimink Quilting is primarily long arm quilting business that has been in business since 2007. Long Arm quilting refers to the machine that is used to stitch a pattern using thread which bonds the three main pieces of a quilt together. I will follow-up with exactly what these three pieces are and how exactly they are quilted together using this long arm quilting machine in later posts. So, back to my original point, the cool new way to promote Deanna’s business is this blog. I plan on contributing to the blog as much as I can and hopefully Deanna will see the value and take it over. In the beginning you will get view point of the husband of a quilter and not that of a quilter. As many of you may be aware, quilting is an obsession for some folks and a hobby for others. Quilting, I can tell you is an obsession for Deanna. She began piecing quilt tops and quilting back in 1995 when we first moved back to Delaware from Maryland. She loves quilting so much, she branched out into a business. The thing I like/love about quilts is that it is a craft that is actually useful. Sorry if I offended anyone, but, like I said earlier, this is the view of the husband of a quilter. I respect the abilities of those who can make crafts, it is just that some crafts are more useful than others as seen thru the eyes of a male.
